Work at Home Dads and Children

Working from home is getting more popular. Working at home with children in the house can drive Dad insane. just when you think you have everything covered, the random act of a child (ROC) takes you out of your working muse. a broken dish, a fight over a television program, a fight over about anything, a stubbed toe, a wrecked bicycle – any ot these things could potentially knock you off your rhythm.

So, what is a father to do? Depending upon their ages, having older children take shifts watching the younger children works as long as ground rules are laid out in advance. Ground rules like the oldest child’s power. is it absolute (not if you don’t want more trouble than you began with) or limited in scope. what authority are you truly placing in your oldest child’s hands? what repercussions will be meted out when younger children defy the older child. Ultimately, can you tune out the noises of your children?

I have a two-year-old. She is rambunctious. She is fun-loving. She can be a handful, especially if you wish to work on something and it takes your attention away from her. I also have three older children in the home ages 9, 11, and 13. I delegate one hour shifts to each child beginning with the oldest. each shift consist of taking care of their sister one-on-one. this frees me up to work and allows the older children to have significant time with their little sister. They may not realize it now, but in the years to come when everyone is sitting around reminiscing, they’ll be thankful for this quality time foisted upon them by their father.

Tuning out the noise of children can be very trying on a parent. we train ourselves to listen for trouble with our children. then, when we discover work at home is an option, hearing every detail of what they’re up to is now a curse. Distractions cost valuable creative time. as long as your children are behaving in a reasonable manner, you can accomplish tasks. But let your children get out of line, and patience wears thin.

Other distractions to be on the lookout for are special pet projects around the house. These well-intentioned time killers will suck the work-life right out of you. You have to have a place where work is going to happen. this place could be an office, a bedroom, the kitchen the patio, wherever, but you have to be able to produce from this room.

I like the public library. I can go there and write to my hearts content. I also like a couple restaurants that are writer friendly. They have free wifi, accessible electric outlets and atmosphere. You don’t even have to be a writer to enjoy the benefits of these places. If your work is internet connected, you can use the free wifi available and if you must make business calls, sit at an outdoor table. as long as you have that cell phone, put it to productive use.

Of course, in the off-site scenario, you’ll have to have someone babysitting your children. this is, once again, a delegatory issue. use the tools you have within your family dynamic. Older children need to mature. With guidance, you can develop their future by giving them snippets of authority. no doubt, this must be established over time to see if the older children can actually handle the situation, but delegation may just save your day – or job.

In the end, your follow-up on your children daily will help you realize your ambition of working from home. If you can get your children to buy into the importance of your time at work, you will find the importance of your time with them is enhanced. make sure you communicate specifics to your children about how to behave and who is in charge, then sit down with them each day and go over what transpired. By developing a teamwork type of system, your home work life will be enhanced.
